the london based ross evans is coming up again on numbers with a great 4 tracker. after releases on label such as cocoon, saved, break new soil, cr2 and get physical records, just named a few, we finally put 4 strong tracks on the 26th catalog number. the ep starts with someday acid influenced prime time monster. a2 abzorda shows some catchy deep vibes with a cool atmosphere. on the flip we got two more named deranged with the hypno vocals and the screwing bassline and last but not least stroke my ego with the classic deep house touch. hope you enjoy and play numbers

the vinyl version comes as a gatefold cover. every producers dream is to one day complete and release a full length album. after a string of well received 12inch singles on my own label, emphasis recordings, and most recently, on labels like aesthetic audio, machining dreams, syncrophone, and dolly, i thought now is the time to start realizing that dream of the full length album.

opener getting run down loops up a nagging hip hop sample over skittering dukey beats and washes drifting pads and spacey keys over the top for a hypnotic late night groover. reach out goes at a calmer pace, but revolves around intense builds, insistent polyrhythms and detroity riffs for a bit of hypnagogic drama. on memix duties, om unit does what you hope hes going to do, injecting reach out with seemingly infinite swathes of space and bottom end, looping about at his own pace, but with that constant sense of om unit purpose. nphonix closes out proceedings with a tweaky, rubbery acid style workout that will find friends in bass and house camps.

following his recent roland tb-303 experiments for absurd and his understated reworking of scubas the hope, berlins recondite has put together the debut release on boutique-label trolldans, based in the city of kontra-musik.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. while fetsum is about to take the us by storm (after a california tour, in march hes going to perform at the sxsw festival in austin and at the pre-oscars party at the villa aurora in la) sonar kollektiv releases four seminal remixes of his song letters from damascus. one of the centre pieces of his current album the colors of hope is not describing the political situation in syria, its more of an autobiographical tale about the golden voiced german-eriteans life.

tropics a.k.a. chris ward first appeared on planet mu last year, following up two eps with the album parodia flare. commended by pitchfork for his lush soundscapes and hazy pop, whats clear with tropics is that he listens to a lot of dance music and he cares about production values. the synth and beat programming is as competent as anything out there, and he avoids lazy indie stylings and one button bontempi organ beats – his are crafted songs, much of the pleasure lying in his gift for dynamic arrangement, which is a joy amid rafts of useful formulaically assembled house tracks.
in common with the general post-financial collapse vibe there is less sunshine in this ep than before, and he has absorbed something from a year of intensive house music listening, but chris essential qualities remain a forward-looking wistfulness, hope beneath melancholy, something even more acutely needed now than before. oh look! here comes winter.

over the last year i have traveled to canada frequently for gigs and got to know the small but healthy electronic music scene there. cities like montreal, vancouver and toronto have brought forth many established artists over the past few years, such as egyptrixx, azari & iii, basic soul unit, jacques greene, lunice and sixtoo, but 2012 has seen a new breed of no-nonsense house and techno producers come up via labels like turbo recordings and naked lunch. this *dovercourt ep* features three very talented producers: kevin mcphee, nautiluss and gingy. their tracks are a dedication to their hometown of toronto. being removed from the house/techno epicentres of berlin and london, these three are much less interested in what is fashionable or trendy, and more in bringing us straight to the point, no frails jacking house music. i have been playing these three extensively in my dj sets, and i hope you will too. so out to toronto, this one is for you! enjoy. martyn
